Another reason why weight loss is an uphill battle is that we really have to keep track of everything. For example, some perfectly healthy foods will sabotage your process. Most of them are well-known saboteurs, while others are hidden threats to your progress. Let’s see which foods to avoid if you want to lose weight.
Let’s start with the obvious ones – carbs. If you’re looking to lose weight, you have to cut carbs, sugar, and fat from your diet as much as possible. While this might seem like a huge sacrifice, french fries are really working against you.
They taste heavenly, but have a massive amount of fat and calories in them, while providing virtually no protein or fibers. Furthermore, french fries are usually very salted, and a high intake of sodium makes our bodies retain water and gain fat.
While it’s clear that sugary drinks are counterproductive when it comes to dieting, there’s more to it. It’s not just the carbonated drinks and juices that we have to stay away from. Even flavored water has calories and added sugar. Therefore, when trying to lose weight, it’s best to stick to regular water and unsweetened tea.
White bread, pasta, and rice
If it’s white – stay away from it. These types of food have refined wheat flour, and they often have sugar in them. What’s more, they usually have a lot of calories because they are high in carbohydrates but low in other, more nutritional ingredients like protein and fiber.
Candies and baked goods
Ah, there’s nothing better than the smell of fresh pastries in the bakery. However, much like white bread, pastries have a lot of sugar in them. While that tastes divine, it’s not going to do us any favors when it comes to losing weight. The same goes for candies, milk chocolate, and other sugary treats. If you’re craving sweets, it’s best to stick to dark chocolate with a high percentage of cacao.
Energy and granola bars
Now let’s move on to the foods that might trick us into thinking they will aid our struggle. Energy bars and granola bars are usually labeled as “healthy” treats. Therefore, we might find ourselves reaching for them instead of the chocolate candy bars, and patting ourselves on the shoulder for a job well done.
However, the truth is – they often have a lot of sugar as well. While it’s true that you’ll increase your protein and fiber intake with them, you’ll be ingesting almost as much sugar as you would with a regular candy bar.
Again, dried fruit can’t be bad for us, right? After all, it’s fruit! However, eating dried fruit isn’t the same as consuming fresh produce. It has a lot more sugar than regular fruit and more calories per 100 grams. While fresh fruit is rich in fibers, dried fruit has little to offer when it comes to nutritional value.
Overall, the most important thing when we’re trying to lose weight is moderation. We don’t have to cut everything that brings us joy from our lives, but we can’t go overboard. Therefore, treat yourself from time to time, but know that specific foods will hold you back on your weight loss journey.
